Chapter 13

Logan escorts me through the hallways of the beautiful mansion. I’m trying not to be too awkward, though the nervous tightness in my chest is making it difficult. I hope he doesn’t sense it, but there’s something subtle about his body language that makes me think he knows I’m feeling off—even if he isn’t quite sure why.

“You’re sure you know where you’re going?” I ask, hoping to break the uncomfortable tension as we come to the bottom of the stairs.

Logan’s brow scrunches as he gives a quick look around.

“Wait, where are we, again?” he says, sounding especially confused. His mouth hangs open in a dumbfounded expression for a moment before he shoots me a playful look. The laugh that comes out of me is completely unexpected.

“This place is big enough,” I manage. “I’m sure even you get lost from time to time.”

He nods his head in agreement.

“That’s why the house staff is so large—I need them hiding all about so they can save me when I get turned around!”

We laugh— together, this time. It’s a welcome distraction from what I’d been thinking. It doesn’t last long, though. We round a turn in the hallway and the mansion opens up into a massive room with a wall of windows facing out over the pool. I let out a gasp of surprise at the beauty of the sight, but my excitement gets cut short when Gervas appears from nowhere to interrupt us.

“My apologies, Master Atwood…” he says, tilting his head forward. “There’s a call for you…”

The interruption catches Logan off guard.

“Can you take a message?”

Gervas’s expression remains resolute, despite the dismissal.

“It’s Mr. Copeland, sir.”

The expression on Logan’s face changes.

“That man has no boundaries,” Logan says. It’s the first time I’ve seen anything from him that wasn’t his usual coolness. But he composes himself, quickly, as he considers it a bit longer. When he looks up at me he doesn’t even need to say anything.

“Go,” I say. “I’ll be down at the pool.”

I’ve been in the business world long enough to know the look a man gets when it’s time to get back to work.

A soft smile spreads across his face and he gives a quick look around.

“It’s easy to forget that all of this comes with a price,” he says. “Thanks for understanding.”

Logan kisses me on the cheek before disappearing into the mansion at a brisk pace. Gervas stays with me and gives me a moment to go back to admiring the view of the pool from within.

“Shall I escort you, miss?” he asks.

“I’ll be fine,” I say, with a polite smile. “This might be only time I won’t get lost…”

I let out a laugh at the joke but Gervas’s smile doesn’t come anywhere near his eyes.

God, can I be more awkward?

He gives me a light bow before excusing himself. It’s probably best that I make it down to the pool as quick as possible so I can stop making such a fool of myself.

The entire mansion is so gorgeous that I shouldn’t have expected the pool to be anything less.
